haven't had time to get back to this, but idle thought that I'm recording for later investigation: how does the continuous integration handle this installation issue? Is it documented there?

Not certain, but I think tests in CI run on Ubuntu and don't appear to install any additional Sqlite-related dependencies, and so my guess is the version of Sqlite installed by default on Ubuntu has the SQLITE_ENABLE_FTS3_PARENTHESIS option enabled and so doesn't run into this issue.

Thanks, that does look similar!

Unfortunately, pysqlite3-binary isn't available for Mac OS X, so I can't quickly check that that fixes it; will do so later.

Ah that makes sense, I guess that's why this isn't just always installed already. I wonder if a possible solution to this issue could be doing feature detection on whether this feature is supported by the current Sqlite version, and if not these tests could be disabled locally? But possibly there's a better way to handle this, will see what @simonw thinks

What are the full errors you're getting?

This may be the same issue as described in https://github.com/simonw/datasette/pull/1223 - essentially the test suite (and corresponding Datasette features I assume) are by default implicitly dependent on your Sqlite installation having been compiled with the SQLITE_ENABLE_FTS3_PARENTHESIS option. If this is the same issue then I think this can be fixed either by recompiling with that option or (probably more easily) by running pip install pysqlite3-binary, which will be used in preference to your system Sqlite installation and has this option enabled.

One issue I could see with adding first class support for metadata in hjson format is that this would require adding an additional dependency to handle this, for a feature that would be unused by many users. I wonder if this could fit in as a plugin instead; if a hook existed for loading metadata (maybe as part of https://github.com/simonw/datasette/issues/860) the metadata could then come from any source, as specified by plugins, e.g. hjson, toml, XML, a database table etc.

Until/unless this exists, a few ideas for how you could add comments: - Using YAML as you suggest. - A common pattern is adding a "comment" key for comments to any object in JSON - I don't think including an unnecessary key like this would break anything in Datasette, but not certain. - You could use another tool as a preprocessor for your JSON metadata - e.g. hjson or Jsonnet. You'd write the metadata in that format, and then convert that into JSON to actually use as your final metadata.

It doesn't use basic auth, but you can put a whole datasette instance, or parts of this, behind a username/password prompt using https://github.com/simonw/datasette-auth-passwords

This sounds like a good use case for a plugin, since this will only be useful for a subset of Datasette users. It shouldn't be too difficult to add a button to do this with the available plugin hooks - have you taken a look at https://docs.datasette.io/en/latest/writing_plugins.html?

That Docker command will mount your current directory inside the Docker container at /mnt - so you shouldn't need to change anything locally, just run

docker run -p 8001:8001 -v `pwd`:/mnt \ datasetteproject/datasette \ datasette -p 8001 -h 0.0.0.0 /mnt/fixtures.db

and it will use the fixtures.db file within your current directory

According to https://github.com/simonw/datasette/blob/master/docs/installation.rst#using-docker it should be

docker run -p 8001:8001 -v `pwd`:/mnt \ datasetteproject/datasette \ datasette -p 8001 -h 0.0.0.0 /mnt/fixtures.db

This uses /mnt/fixtures.db whereas you're using fixtures.db - did you try using this path instead?

I'm probably missing something but what's the use case here - what would this offer over adding limit 10 to the query?
